Tops Tuesdays: Hadoken

Move over twerking and planking, the "Hadoken" craze is sweeping Japanese high schools. Believed to have started in celebration of the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie released March 30, this new photographic trick of the eye is named after a special attack move from Street Fighter. This is trend is "tops" this week!

T.G.I.F.: Get Your Otaku On In Kyoto!

T.G.I.F. indeed. It has been a long week for me and thank goodness it is over! Thankfully the weekend is here and this is what ALTs all over Japan wait for; the moment when you can clock off and go out and actually explore Japan. So what's on the card's this Saturday and Sunday?

Well, last weekend Kyoto kicked off Kyoto Cross Media Experience 2012, a 3-month-long celebration of all things anime, filmic and nerdy. It's Kyoto's fourth year to host the event and this year looks set to be just as satisfying as the last! The anime/media festival itself will run between September 21st and December 9th. Of particular note this weekend is a seminar titled "Kyoto Computer Gakuin," in which leading CG animators from Japan, Europe and Taiwan go head to head in what they are calling a "CG Animation Cup" tournament. This event starts at 3pm at the Great Hall of the main building of Kyoto University. It is open to the public to watch so come and help the judges decide who reigns supreme in the world of CG animation! Click here to visit the website and find out more about this tournamentDon't worry if you can't attend in person, you can watch the  official live streaming at Nico Video and YouTube

Tops Tuesday!

Tops

I know this didn't strictly take place in Japan but anime and cosplay originated in Japan so this dude and his awesome Blue-Eyes White Dragon cosplay that he is trying to sell make this week's Tops Tuesday post...

See you tomorrow for a post about my school's Sports Festival!

Tops Tuesdays!

TOPS

I found this video making the rounds on RocketNews24.com entitled "Superhero." The video was produced by an annonymous duo under the guise of "ANONS PROJECT" and their song makes for a catchy tune. The video includes footage from last year's 311 disaster in Tohoku, originally intended to highlight the ongoing recovery efforts of officials and volunteers still working in the area. The footage is interspersed with images and footage of Japanese superheroes (including, Anpanman, Sailor Moon, and Son Goku). Having largely been met with positive response, I decided to share it here...

Travel Log: Akihabara, Tokyo.

This is one of my favourite haunts in Tokyo (after trendy Harajuku and the fashion mazes of Shibuya). Listed in the top 3 of most visited places in Tokyo on japan-guide.com. Haven of nerds, otaku mecca, “Electric Town,” home of anime/manga… Akihabara (or simply “Akiba” as it is affectionately known to locals) is all this and more. I recently made my way to this popular neighbourhood in Tokyo to see if it could live up to its name. So get your nerd on and join me as I explore the hallowed annals of Akihabara…
